Many golf courses replace their fleets of golf carts every few years. Because there are many thousands of courses in the U.S. alone, this translates a huge supply of gently used golf carts on the market.

Used golf carts offer substantial savings over new golf carts. Golf carts that are just a few years old sell for as little as half the price of new models. You might have to overlook a few dings and scrapes. But, you'll be able to find a golf cart that is functional and reliable.

Because most golf courses use electric golf carts, you won't find a large supply of gas-powered golf carts in the used market. The ones that you do find will not be offered at a substantial savings. Buying used is a better option for those in the market for an electric golf cart.

Used Golf Cart Average Costs #

The vast majority of used golf carts sell for $2,000 to $5,000. That's a substantial discount, given the $4,000 to $10,000 price tag for most new models.

  • A standard golf cart that is three to five years old generally sells for $3,000 to $5,000. Many come with features such as headlights and tail lights, windshields and zip covers.
  • Street legal golf carts that are five to 10 years old usually go for $5,000 to $6,000.
  • A standard cart that is five to eight years old normally sells for $2,000 to $4,000.

When the asking price is less than $2,000, be wary of what you're buying. Golf carts priced in that range are generally at least 10 years old and could have substantial wear and tear or mechanical problems.

On the other end of the spectrum, high-end used golf carts can sell for $6,000 to $10,000. Generally, these are custom-designed carts with a host of luxury features: radios, heaters, DVD players, hard tops, stainless steel accessories, custom tires, and the like.

Refurbished vs. "As Is" Golf Carts #

Any used golf cart that is advertised as "refurbished" is probably a safe purchase. These golf carts have undergone a detailed inspection and tune-up by either the manufacturer or dealer before being advertised for resale. The often come with up to 90-day warranties.

Be skeptical of any used golf cart marked "as is." That could be an indication that the golf cart has some mechanical or electrical issues.

It's always best to buy used golf carts from a dealer. When you buy a golf cart over the Internet or through a private sale, you can never be sure exactly what you're getting. Shop multiple dealers in order to get the best price.
