How Much Does a Double Oven Cost?

Do you entertain often or have a large family? Maybe you simply have a passion for cooking and trying out new recipes. Whether the reason is practical or personal, some people find single, traditional ovens to be limiting. For them, double ovens offer increased capacity and possibilities in the kitchen.
Dual Oven Options #
Double ovens come in the same sizes as standard ranges but provide two separate ovens, each with their own door. Manufacturers make room for the extra oven by eliminating the storage drawer.
On many models, the top oven is smaller than the bottom oven. Some models, however, have two equally-sized ovens. As with standard ovens, a cooktop with four (and often five) burners is featured on the top of the unit.
A double oven is significantly more expensive than a standard oven, although the actual cost depends on the features chosen. Popular double oven configurations include the following:
Standalone vs. Wall oven: A dual oven can be installed at countertop level (like a standard, single oven) or in the wall above the countertop. Double wall ovens are more ergonomic, especially in regards to the lower oven, because you don't have to bend low to access food. A double wall oven, however, require a separate cooktop.
Electric vs. Gas: Electric ovens tend to have a lower starting cost and larger capacity. They're also more popular, so a greater number of models are offered. Gas ovens have a loyal fan base, however, who note that these units keep food moister. Gas, furthermore, tends to be more efficient than electricity. A dual fuel range features an electric oven and a gas cooktop.
Heating technology: A greater number of ovens now feature convection heating, which distributes heat more evenly with a fan and lowers cooking times by up to 25%. Older thermal heating technology does not have any special mechanism for circulating heat. A "true" convection oven has an extra heating element that pre-heats the air blown by the fan and is slightly more efficient than a standard convection oven. The newest ovens have steam-assist technology. A longtime favorite of professional chefs, steam cooking is faster and it keeps food moister.
Other options: Pricier double ovens have more built-in features such as:
Larger windows (for better food viewing)
Brighter interior lights
Temperature probes (that alert you when food is thoroughly cooked)
Delayed bake (set the oven to turn on at a specific time, even when you're out of the house)
Warm and hold setting (similar to a warming drawer)
Variable setting broiler
Double Oven Average Costs #
- Double ovens start at around $1,250 to $2,500 and can cost as much as $4,000 to $5,000 or more.
- Professional installation of a double oven might cost $100 to $200 (or more, if cabinet alteration is required). To make installation as easy as possible, look for a double oven that's the same size as your old oven. Costs can easily double or even triple for installation of a new wall oven, as it must be built directly into the walls and cabinetry. If replacing an old wall oven, installation will be simpler and less expensive.
