How Much Does an Asphalt Shingle Roof Cost?

Author: Brian Eckert

Asphalt Shingle Roof Prices

Asphalt shingles are the most popular roofing material in the United States. In fact, if you drive around a typical residential neighborhood, approximately three out of four homes you pass will have asphalt shingle roofing.

The popularity of asphalt roofs—also known as composition roofs—stems from their cost effectiveness and performance. While materials such as slate and tile may last significantly longer than asphalt, their high price tag makes them unrealistic for the majority of homeowners. Furthermore, technological advancements have resulted in asphalt shingles that are more attractive, longer lasting, and better for the environment. To learn more about asphalt roofing shingles, including how much you can expect to pay for them, continue reading.

Asphalt Shingles: An Overview

Asphalt roof shingles have three main components: the base (also called a felt, mat, or substrate), an asphalt coating, and a weather-resistant topcoat made from mineral granules. The shingle base provides it with structure and strength, the asphalt lends a degree of weatherability and stability, and the surface granules give a shingle its color in addition to ultraviolet ray protection.

Asphalt Shingle Types

Asphalt shingles are differentiated by their base material. The two types of asphalt shingles, fiberglass and organic, possess the following characteristics:

  • Organic Asphalt Shingles: Asphalt shingles have an organic felt made from thick paper (often waste paper or wood/paper pulp). The original type of composition roof, organic asphalt shingles are a bit thicker, heavier, and more flexible than fiberglass shingles and are better at absorbing moisture.
  • Fiberglass Asphalt Shingles: These shingles have a base composed of fiberglass (glass fibers). A newer technology, fiberglass shingles are lighter, thinner, and more fire retardant than organic asphalt shingles.

A newer type of fiberglass shingle—architectural shingles (also called laminated shingles or dimensional shingles), contain a more substantial mat base than traditional asphalt shingles (known as 3-tab shingles). Considered a high-end roofing product, architectural asphalt shingles better resist adverse the elements and often come with a lifetime warranty. They can be made to closely resemble other materials such as slate and wood shakes.

Asphalt Shingle Roof Average Costs

The actual cost of an asphalt shingle roof may vary depending on the materials used, your location, the complexity of the installation (i.e. roof slope and home height), and other factors.

  • 3-Tab asphalt shingles cost $1.50 to $3.50 per square foot. For an average-sized (1,500 square foot roof), the total cost might be $2,250 to $5,250.
  • Architectural asphalt roof shingles cost, on average, cost around 20 to 40 percent more than 3-Tab shingles, or $2.50 to $5.00 per square foot installed ($3,750 to $7,500). High end architectural shingles, however, could run as much as $6 to $8 per square foot installed ($9,000 to $12,000).
  • Removing and disposing of your existing roof could cost an additional $1 to $4 per square foot to the total asphalt shingle roofing cost.
