How Much Does an Asphalt Shingle Roof Cost?
Asphalt Shingle Roof Prices
Asphalt shingle roofing is what the majority of residential roofs are made from. When you drive around most neighborhoods in the USA you will see asphalts shingles on 95% of the homes. They’re cost effective and provide great sheltering capabilities as a roofing material. Other roofing materials can cost up to five times as much. Some may last longer than asphalt shingles but not many people have $50,000 to spend on a new roof. These shingles are cost effective and durable.

When installing a roof the job is measured by the square. One square* is equal to the size of a 10’X10’ area, or 100 square feet.
The average cost of asphalt shingle roofing is $.80 to $1.20 per square foot for the materials. Quality of shingles does make a difference in the performance of your roof and, mostly, in the longevity of your roof. If you buy the least expensive shingles on the market you will not be getting a quality product. Your roof may only last 15-20 years versus 25-30 years you will get from the life.
Many roofers will quote you by the square. For a walkable, medium pitch roof, the average cost per square will be somewhere between $100 to $200 per square for the shingles alone. The labor will cost more. Tearing off old roofing, installing the new roof and clean up should all be included in quoted labor prices. For the same medium pitched roof the cost will be about $175 to $250 per square for removal.

Combining the two costs for labor and materials you will get a cost range of $275 to $450 per square. If you use the rough estimate that an average roof in America is 40’ X 60’ you will get an area of 2400 square feet. Divide 2400 by 100 to get the number of squares and that comes out to be 24 squares even, in this case. 24 squares of roofing at a price of $275 to $450 per square will cost $6,600 to $10,800. That is what you can expect to pay for an asphalt shingle roof that is installed by professionals.
