What is Powder Coating?

Powder coating is a dry finishing process that creates a protective finish on all types of metals. It is especially useful because it creates a hard, protective finish that is much tougher than any conventional paint. There are many different powder coat colors you can choose from. The process is a safer alternative than chromium plating. It is extremely low in toxicity and flammability. It's no wonder why powder coating is so popular with its durability and versatility.

Powder coating is achieved using an electrostatic spray gun. It, basically, turns the powder coat material into a magnet attracted to the surface. The surface is then heated to 400 degrees which melts the particles and creates a smooth, uniform surface. After it is cooled, the powder coat turns into a hard, durable finish that is ready to protect and beautify for a very long time.

Advantages of Powder Coating

Powder coating is much more durable than paint. It resists chipping, chemicals, corrosion, impact, UV light, and the elements. Using this process is actually more environmentally friendly than traditional spray paints, as no VOC's are emitted and there is no hazardous waste produced. There will also be much lower maintenance costs with a powder coated object.

Powder Coating Costs

The cost to have an object powder coated depends on the color, type (smooth powder coating vs. rough), and the amount of preparation work. A color that is a blend of the ROYGBIV scale means mixing powders and extra labor. The type of powder coating you need will also affect the price. It is much easier to spray a powder coat that is rough than it is to spray a smooth gloss powder coat. There is an additive to the blend that will make it glossy smooth. Expect to pay $45-$65 per hour for labor to have an object powder coated, depending on the variables.
