Not that long ago, utility vehicles were simply golf carts that had been adapted for other uses. But, as manufacturers caught on to their popularity, they began designing utility vehicles specifically for commercial and industrial use.

Utility vehicles are used for personal transportation around college campuses, airports and industrial warehouses - any location where there's a lot of ground to cover. They're also popular for hauling equipment and materials from one location to another. They're used in farming, landscaping, and grounds maintenance, too.

Modern utility vehicles are sold in a variety of sizes and configurations. The price depends heavily on the type of utility vehicle you choose, how powerful it is, and the features and options you select.

Utility Vehicle Average Costs #

Most new utility vehicles sell for $6,000 to $12,000. You can spend less for a basic, stripped-down model or more for a larger model with greater hauling power and advanced features.

  • A Club Car Villager 2+2 LSV with a 48-volt electric motor, four seats, 5 horsepower and an on-board charger usually sells for anywhere from $9,000 to $11,000, depending on the features and accessories you select.
  • A John Deer Gator XUV, a heavy duty utility vehicle with a diesel engine and 24.6 horsepower usually costs $11,000 to $13,000.

If you're on a limited budget, consider buying a used utility vehicle. Used models begin in price at around $3,000. However, you'll find mostly electric models in the used market. Gas-powered models are less common and owners tend to hold onto them longer.

Accessories and optional features can add hundreds or thousands of dollars to the total purchase price. For example, a windshield usually runs $200 to $400 extra while a rain enclosure can cost an extra $300 to $500. Be sure to ask for an estimate that includes the cost of any accessories you're planning to buy.

Choosing a Utility Vehicle #

Before you start shopping various dealers, it's helpful to have an idea of what kind of utility vehicle you'd like to purchase. Here are a few things to think about before you start shopping:

  • Are you planning to use the vehicle indoors, outdoors or both? For strictly indoor use, you'll want to buy an electric utility vehicle. For outdoor use - particularly on rough terrain - you'll probably want a gas-powered model.
  • How much weight do you need to carry? If you need the utility vehicle for hauling, you're going to want to pay extra for some additional horsepower.
  • Do you need the utility vehicle to be street legal?
  • Do you need space for additional passengers? Most utility vehicles seat either two or four, but you can find models with additional seating capacity if you're willing to spend extra.
