How Much Does a Well Pump Cost?

If you are buying or currently living in a house with a well, at some point, you are either going to have to install or replace a pump for a well. A well pump pushes water from your well (typically artesian) into your house's water tank where it is distributed throughout the house. It feeds all of your indoor appliances and makes the modern home convenient.

There are two different types of well pumps, submersible pumps and jet pumps. Submersible pumps can be installed underwater, as the name implies. Jet pumps can be installed above or below the water line. The type of jet pump that installs below the water line is a deep well jet pump. It is used for wells that are more than 30 feet deep. The whole assembly is not submersible, just the jet assembly itself. The engine of the pump remains above water. Shallow well jet pumps are used for wells less than 30 feet deep and cannot be submerged in water.

The cost difference between the two types of pumps is negligible. The GPM, or gallons per minute, variable is what typically has the most influence over cost. A low quality, low flow-rate pump can run anywhere between $300 and $600, with installation costing around $700 to $1,000. A high end, high flow-rate pump can cost upwards of $1,000, with installation being generally the same. Submersible and deep well jet pump installations typically run higher than a shallow well jet pump due to the extra labor involved. It is advisable to have this type of project done by a professional, since most pumps that come with a warranty will not honor the warranty unless it is installed by a licensed professional. Repair and replacement costs of a well pump rival those of first time installation, so make sure to take any warranty offered.
