As the frequency of blackouts and natural disasters like hurricanes or ice storms has increased sales of home generators have skyrocketed. But, the problem with most portable generators is that they require a constant fuel source.

Solar generators collect energy from the sun and store power for when you need it. Solar powered home generators function just as well as gas powered generators, but you won’t have to deal with the cost or hassle of replenishing fuel. You also won’t miss the noise, smell, or risk of fire.

Solar powered home generators are sold in a variety of sizes and with varying capabilities. That translates to a big variety in price - from just $100 to tens of thousands of dollars.

Low Power Solar Generator Average Costs

For about $100 you can buy a small “power pack” solar generator with 5 watts and 10 amp hours. They generally have a couple outlets, a USB port and a DC socket. But, they don’t offer a lot of power and some models take about two full days to charge. They also get lackluster consumer reviews.

For $500, you can buy a 15 watt, briefcase-style generator that will power small devices like cell phones and laptops.

High Power Solar Generator Prices

For $2,000 to $4,000 you can buy a larger solar generator designed to provide backup power for your home. Most have 1,800 to 3,000 watts, and some offer as many as 245 amp hours.

  • A Harvester mobile generator with 105 amp hours and up to 240 watts of power begins at $3,800. These generators can be used for lighting, remote power, computers, medical equipment, and the like.
  • A SUNRNR Sun 100 portable solar generator with 135 watts sells for $3,800 to $4,000. It also comes with a one-year warranty.

The largest solar powered generators are capable of fully powering an entire home or building. But, they’re pricey; generally running between $10,000 and $50,000. They usually have at least 3,500 watts and offer a couple thousand amp hours.

Also, if you’re buying a large solar powered home generator, factor in an extra $500 to $1,000 for shipping costs.
