The cost between the two is not so much that it should deter you from choosing one over the other. It really comes down to if you prefer the look of polyurethane or the look of oil. They both look fantastic as floor finishing applications in their own respects. It is a matter of taste which one you prefer to install in your home.
Polyurethane will protect your wood floors longer than oil. Polyurethane is basically an application of a liquid plastic on top of the wood surface. Therefore, it can be scratched and nicked and not do much damage to the wood. Oil does seal wood floors but it does not have the “paint” quality that polyurethane does have. Therefore, polyurethane is said to help you wood floors last longer. Of course, there is no substitute for proper hardwood floor care.
What is the cost difference between oil and polyurethane?
The cost of polyurethane is more expensive than the cost of oil finish. Polyurethane costs $40 to $50 per gallon and will cover 400 square feet. Most oil stains will cost $10 to $30 per gallon and cover 600 square feet. Therefore, by the time the project is finished you can spend $50 or more by choosing polyurethane over an oil finish.
