Ultrasound machines are a critical piece of equipment in the medical world. Ultrasound technology, also called sonography, is an essential tool in diagnosing and treating a variety of medical conditions.

Although most people think of ultrasounds as a procedure to monitor the development of a fetus during pregnancy, medical professionals know the technology has a variety of uses. These include diagnosing heart conditions, detecting tumors and monitoring the health of internal organs like the liver, pancreas, bladder and kidneys.

Ultrasound machines do have limitations. Ultrasound waves have trouble passing through gas or air so they're not ideal for diagnosing bowel disorders. They have trouble penetrating bone. They're not as reliable when used on large patients because the sound waves become weaker as the move deeper into the body. Still, ultrasound machines are among the many essential pieces of equipment for doctor's offices, hospitals, and medical clinics.

Ultrasound Machine Average Costs #

Ultrasound machines start at about $10,000 and range up to $200,000. The price depends largely on the level of technology. A small clinic can purchase a simple, black and white ultrasound machine on the low end of that price range while a large hospital might pay $150,000 for a color machine that produces 4-Dimensional images.

Most new ultrasound machines fall in the $20,000 to $75,000 range. Used or refurbished machines - which offer a great opportunity for saving money - usually run $5,000 to $40,000 for average models.

  • The GE Voluson E8 Expert BT06 Ultrasound Machine starts at about $115,000. This high-end machine offers a high resolution 4D probe, high quality volume contrast imaging and a 19-inch, high resolution flat screen monitor. It's also one of the lightest consoles on the market. Refurbished models are sold for less than $100,000.
  • The GE Voluson 730 Expert 4D Ultrasound Machine starts at about $75,000. Refurbished models are available for less than $50,000.
  • A refurbished Philips Envisor C 3D Ultrasound Machine can be purchased for $20,000 to $40,000.

Portable ultrasound machines, which are great for convenience but produce lower quality images, retail for $50,000 to $100,000.

  • The Acuson Cypress Plus Portable Ultrasound Machine in 2D starts at about $30,000.
  • The GE Vivid i Portable Ultrasound Machine, also in 2D, starts at about $32,000.

Other Ultrasound Machine Prices and Fees #

The price of the machine itself is not the only cost you'll incur:

  • Basic installation and training is usually included in the price of the machine. But if your staff requires a detailed training course, budget an extra $1,000 to $6,000 to bring in an outside expert.
  • Delivery usually adds a few hundred dollars to the total price.
  • Maintenance agreements that provide cleaning, service and repairs cost about 15 percent of the purchase price each year.
  • Additional transducer probes can run anywhere from $500 to $5,000. Standard probes are generally less than $1,000 while high-end probes often range from $3,000 to $5,000.
  • Ultrasound printers range from $1,000 to $3,000. Not surprisingly, black and white printers cost less than thermal or color printers.
  • A starter package of ultrasound accessories like transmission gel, lotion and pads is often included in the purchase price. But keep in mind that you'll have to pay to replenish these supplies on a regular basis.
