One of the first and most important decisions you'll need to make when shopping for a golf cart is whether to buy gas or electric. Electric go carts are more common, but gas-powered models are a better option under certain circumstances.

One of the greatest advantages to a gas-powered golf cart is the convenience. There's no need to plug them in overnight to charge, and you don't have to worry about running out of power on the middle of the course or in the middle of the woods.

About Gas Golf Carts #

Gas-powered golf carts are ideal if you plan to use the vehicle for many hours at a time. They're perfect for hunting and fishing trips, for example, where there won't be access to an electrical outlet.

Gas golf carts are faster and more powerful than electric carts, making them a better choice for farming, landscaping and other heavy duty outdoor uses. Gas golf carts are also better suited for negotiating steep or uneven terrain, and they're capable of pulling heavy loads.

One of the biggest drawbacks to gas golf carts is that they're more expensive to operate. They're also noisier and not as environmentally friendly. Some golf courses and gated communities prohibit the use of gas-powered golf carts, so make sure to find out if they're authorized before purchasing one.

Gas Golf Cart Average Costs #

There's often no difference in price between electric and gas golf carts. Many manufacturers make identical models in both gas and electric versions and most dealers sell them for the same price.

Gas golf carts begin at around $4,000 and run as much as $15,000. On the low end of that price range you'll get a basic model with very few frills. On the high end, you'll be able to purchase a luxury golf cart with custom features like radios, DVD players and coolers.

Most standard models fall in the $5,000 to $10,000 price range. In that range, you can expect to find a wide variety of two- and four-seaters with features including headlights and taillights, a windshield and a zip enclosure.

  • A Yamaha Drive gas golf cart with two seats, 11.4 horsepower and a four-stroke engine typically sells for $5,000 to $6,000.
  • A Club Car DS two-seater with 9 horsepower generally sells for $5,500 to $7,500.

If you're buying a golf cart for industrial use, plan on spending slightly more - usually in the $8,000 to $12,000 range. Industrial golf carts are more expensive because they are generally larger and have extra features like a bed on the back for hauling supplies.

Gas Golf Cart Additional Costs #

Sometimes extra features like seat belts and three-sided enclosures are included in the price of your golf cart. Other times, they run extra. Here's what you can expect to pay for some of the most popular features:

  • Seat belts: $100 or more per pair
  • Specialized paint jobs: $200+
  • Three-sided enclosures: $100 to $300
  • Headlight/taillight kits: $100 to $200
  • Alloy wheels: $500 to $600

When purchasing a gas golf cart, it's also important to consider the cost of fuel because it will be a recurring expense. Most golf carts hold between five and seven gallons of gas and get 25 to 30 miles to the gallon.
